After months of speculation, leader lists, and Twitter emoji deciphering, the verdict is in: the top wide receiver in the 2013 recruiting class is going to Oxford.
Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill., Crete-Monee) made his decision at a press conference on Thursday afternoon at his high school. He chose the Rebels over finalists Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Early on in his recruitment, he also expressed strong interest in Florida, Illinois, and Michigan. Other offers include: Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and USC.
All four major recruiting websites (Rivals, Scout, 247, and ESPN) have Treadwell listed as a five-star prospect. He is listed as the No.10 overall prospect in the country by Rivals and No.19 by ESPN. Originally a quarterback, he has spent time at defensive end, linebacker, and even place kicker during his time at Crete-Monee.
The 6’3, 200 Lb. receiver is as physical as they come, earning comparisons to Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin when they left high school. He has big hands and catches it at the highest point. His mean streak on the football field is unmatched at his position, as he appears to embrace the hands battle in the first five yards.
While his hands, athleticism, and physicality are all important strengths of Treadwell, the most impressive might be his work ethic. Certain prospects such as Bryce Brown or Deandre Brown are wire-to-wire coveted prospects, Treadwell built his reputation up gradually. After being viewed as a pretty good prospect his junior year, he shot up all of the charts by attending every camp he could, and dominating each one.
Treadwell is the third receiver commit for Ole Miss. He joins Derrick Jones and early enrollee Quadarias Mireles. Hugh Freeze might not be done at the position either, as he continues his pursuit of Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla.) and Quincy Adeboyejo (Cedar Hill, Tx.).
A unit that already features dynamic deep-threat Donte Moncrief and Vincent Sanders among others, Treadwell gives quarterback Bo Wallace another big playmaker to throw the ball to. Treadwell has shut down his recruiting for good and will instead focus on becoming a recruiter. Taking to Twitter and texting, he has been doing all that he can to bolster an already stellar class.
