2012 Season: Thompson redshirted last season after a disappointing first two seasons in Oxford that saw him record just 1 tackle in 11 games. A U.S. Army All-American, Thompson was highly recruited out of high school and was expected to contribute immediately. Hugh Freeze said that Thompson needed a redshirt year to mature not only physically, but off the field as well.

Value: Apparently the redshirt year helped Thompson as he was one of the most talked about players in the spring. With CJ Johnson out due to injury, Thompson took some reps with the first team and shined. Chris Kiffin raved about him and it appears as though he will have a large role in the rotation of Johnson, Channing Ward, Robert Nkemdiche and Cameron Whigham among others.

There was speculation that Thompson might switch to tight end due to the Rebels’ bare cupboard at the position. His impressive spring seemed to nullify those qualms and he should be a nice asset off the edge. If he can get close to the hype that surrounded him out of high school, then Freeze might have found a gem in a restoration project.
