We are just two weeks away from our annual Bancorp South Grove Bowl and this is our first official football post of the season.

In my honest opinion, I hope this years Grove Bowl out does last year’s by a mile. That thing was atrociously boring. With just two weeks away until the annual Red vs Blue game, the Rebels have been prepping themselves and finding the right grooves for each player. In this post, we will give you the latest updates from the recent spring practices.

On Saturday, the Rebels practiced in Vaught Hemingway Stadium. There were some big plays on both sides of the ball, but it was the defense that got the better part of the day, when junior defensive back Trae Elston broke up a pass on the final play.

Head Coach Hugh Freeze had this to say about Saturday’s scrimmages:

"The defense took the ball away some. They stopped the run most of the day. There were some good things and a lot of things for us to build on. I told them after it was over, `Now, let’s add execution to attitude and effort for the next two weeks."

Bo Wallace was on fire Saturday, completing touchdown passes to Evan Engram, Laquon Treadwell, and Quincy Adeboyjo. Devante Kincade also completed a touchdown pass to Cody Core.

Bo Wallace had this to say about his offense on Saturday:

"The ones on offense, we had a really good day. We’re light years ahead of where we were two years ago, especially the defense. They are really bringing it, and we’re still moving the ball, so that’s encouraging."

Freeze’s comments on Laquon Treadwell:

"He’s excited about playing outside, He’s been phenomenal in practice. The last couple of days, he’s dropped a couple of passes that are not normal for him, but I’m not concerned. He’s going to be a special player out there for us. He’s a physical blocker. He’s a big guy who can catch it with people in tight coverage on him."

The competition of who is going to back-up Bo Wallace this season is tightening up. Devante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan continue to go head-to-head for the position. Jeremy Liggins and Kendrick Doss are also in the mix for the position.

Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach, Dan Werner on Devante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan:

"They’re both right there. We’re going to keep on grading them and see where they end up at the end of the spring, but I’m pleased with both of them. They both have a long way to go, but they’re working hard and they’re both going to be really quarterbacks for us someday."

Bo Wallace was really impressed with Daronte Bouldin and Ben Still on the offensive line. The coaches had their eyes on improvements in the run game from a pair of running backs, Jordan Wilkins and Eugene Brazley.

Freeze on running backs:

"I was proud of the way Wilkins finished a couple of runs at the end. Brazley also finished his runs and showed what we think he has. Jaylen (Walton) and I’Tavius (Mathers), too. We’re happy with all of those guys. They did a really nice job in the last period of picking up the blitzes, which you have to do in this league."

Werner on the running backs:

"You can see that both of those made some nice runs and get downhill quickly. Brazley has really good vision. He probably needs to get more and north and south, but he will make you miss. He’s going to be tough to tackle."

The Rebels are set to be back on the field for practice on Monday morning and will be closed to the public. This coming Saturday’s practice will be open to the public.
