Former Rebel and NFL free agent Greg Hardy has shown interest in pursuing a career in mixed martial arts. Many would love to see him actually fighting men his own size.

When it comes to absolute talent, Greg Hardy had it in spades. He was an all-pro defensive end while playing with the Carolina Panthers. While at Ole Miss, Hardy put up impressive numbers. He had 26.5 career sacks and 38.5 career tackles for loss. Hardy was the ultimate pass rusher on the field.

His off-field antics have not been so great. Hardy was arrested in late September on a charge of cocaine possession. Yesterday, the free agent announced that he has decided to put his NFL career on hold and pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts fighting.

Supposedly, Hardy has been training for a while. As an avid Ole Miss supporter, I would normally be fully cheering him on to victory. Especially a Rebel who has been such a star on the field.

However, he appears to have been the ultimate jerk while off the field. He has his current drug charge as well as being arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault and communicating a threat following an altercation with his girlfriend.

I’m sorry, “alleged” altercation.

Here’s the simplified version. He “allegedly” slammed his  girlfriend on the floor and into the bathtub. Then he “allegedly” threatened to kill her while strangling her. Then he “allegedly” threw her onto a couch or bed covered with guns.

Before any hardcore, Hardy fans remind me that charges were dropped, I already know that. It is also known that many domestic violence victims look for opportunities to not have to go through the court system due to our society having a habit of crucifying the victims.

But the photos that were later released showed the bruises all over his girlfriend’s body on the night of the incident.

Let me be frank. I believe any man the beats a woman is a coward. Especially if he’s 6’5 280 pounds and has a bed filled with guns. I don’t care if he was a Ole Miss Rebel, a Baltimore Raven, or a Mississippi State Bulldog. A coward is a coward.

There is nothing better than seeing a coward get what he deserves. Normally, to watch an untrained fighter step into the octagon against a man who has been trained to fight in mix martial arts would be unfair. However, I will enjoy seeing Hardy fight a man for once. Someone who can defend themselves aptly.

There will be no intimidation. Hardy will have to go toe to toe with a grown man. Cowards usually don’t do so well when they face their equal. They tend to not like to get punched in the nose. You see, cowards pick on those who they believe to be weaker. They choose those that can’t fight back.

Now he will stand against another man. One on one against someone who will hit him back. I will be cheering for the other guy. Hardy is only a Rebel in the record books. He’s not a true Rebel. I’m not required to cheer for someone who isn’t a true Rebel.
