Ole Miss baseball was looking at a do or die moment Saturday as they faced Mizzou, hoping they could salvage the series. The Rebels would manage to even the series with a 3-1 win. Now they have to close with a Sunday afternoon win in order to cinch the series and salvage a .500 record in the SEC.

This will be no easy hill to climb for Ole Miss baseball (24-15, 8-9). No Rebel baseball fan ever believed we would be 1 game below .500 in the SEC at this point. This season however, has been a season for surprises across the SEC. No more-so than the SEC West.

If we look down the stretch towards Hoover, the competition is only going to get tougher and having to play back-against-the-wall baseball is not what we need. Ole Miss baseball will have to start winning the first games in the series in order to achieve success down the stretch.

However, playing from behind wasn’t a problem for the Rebels Saturday as they started scoring early and kept the pressure on Mizzou (27-13, 8-9) defensively for the entire game, to get the 3-1 win to even the series.

More from Ole Hotty Toddy

Due to a bout with a stomach bug, David Parkinson would be a no-go for the Game-2 starter. Freshman  Ryan Rolison (50-2, 1.65) received the starting role and was outstanding.

Rolison pitched 6.0 scoreless innings of duty on the hill, allowing only 1 hit while tossing a career-high 9 Ks. Rolison’s only blemish on the day was the 5 walks he issued, although he managed them well.

Will Ethridge (1-2, 2.36) entered the game in the 7th and pitched 2 innings of scoreless effort. Ethridge allowed no hits while issuing 1 K.

Reliable closer Dallas Woolfolk (1.52, 8) worked the 9th and allowed the only earned run in the game on 2 hits. Woolfolk did strike out 2 Tiger batters and pitched out of a jam to end the game. Rolison picked up the win in the contest while Woolfolk picked up the save.

In The Box

Offensively the Rebels once again worked the Mizzou pitcher. Although ace Tanner Houck worked 8 full innings and recorded 7 Ks, he did allow 3 earned runs on 5 hits. The top of the order was once again the deciding factor in the game with each of the first 4 Rebel batters recording hits.

Tate Blackman (.279) went 1 for 3 at the plate scoring 1 run. Will Golsan (.296) was 1 for 3 while scoring 2 runs on the day. Colby Bortles (.288) went 1 for 3 while driving in 2 RBIs. Ryan Olenek (.280) and Cooper Johnson (.169) were also 1 for 3 on the afternoon. Although he went 0-4 on the day, Tim Rowe had a sacrifice which pushed in a RBI.
