Coming off a midweek shutout against Arkansas State, Ole Miss baseball hoped to bounce back at No.23 Auburn. However, they fell behind early in the first game of the regular season ending series and lost the contest 4-1.

Ole Miss baseball has struggled offensively off and on throughout the SEC schedule. Once again they would prove ineffective against a stout Auburn pitching staff Thursday night. No.23 Auburn (33-21, 15-13) pitching allowed only 1 earned run on 3 hits.

With the SEC Tourney just around the corner, this Ole Miss baseball team has to find itself offensively in this series in a hurry. If not? Well, this could be a long weekend ahead of a very short tourney run. For now, let’s break down the game by the numbers.

More from Ole Miss Baseball

Regular game 1 starter James McArthur took the mound first for the Rebels Thursday night. McArthur (3-6, 4.73) put in 3.1 innings of work on the hill allowing only 2 earned runs on 6 hits. He recorded 4 Ks while walking 2 Tigers.

Houston Roth entered the game in the 4th inning on a Mike Bianco call to the pen. Roth (3-0, 1.65) went 2.2 innings allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits. Roth had no walks and recorded 2 Ks.

Brady Feigl finished out the night on the rubber for the Rebels. Feigl (2-2, 3.83) entered the game in the 7th and pitched 2.0 solid innings of work. Feigl faced only 6 Tigers while recording 2 Ks and no walks.

In total Thursday night, Rebel pitchers went 8.0 innings giving up 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 9 Tiger batters. Defensively Ole Miss matches up well with Auburn. However, lack of offensive production and 2 errors proved too costly for the Rebels in game 1. McArthur picked up the loss.

In The Box

Ole Miss baseball fans, including myself, have been outside our minds over the on off offense of this baseball team. Sure, Auburn has great pitching but in all honesty, these Rebels have hit better than this against much better pitching staffs. We’ve all been watching the same season I’m guessing.

At any rate, let’s break down the offensive numbers. On the night Rebel batters accounted for 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 12 times at the plate. Leading all Rebel hitters was Tate Blackman with a 1 for 2 night. Blackman (.295) drew 2 walks and scored the game’s only run. DH Tim Rowe (.261) went 1 for 3 while Will Golsan (.314) went 1 for 4 in the game. However, the Rebels stranded 4 base runners.

Thats the numbers. It’s pretty bad to not have numbers on the offensive side of the ball when we have such a great pitching staff and defense. However, we seem to play better under pressure. Well, the pressure is on. Sure, we are in the SEC Tourney, but we need this series. Can Ole Miss bounce back? We find out tonight.

First pitch is set for 6pm CT and of course will be available on SECN+.
