Saturday may have not went how we wanted to in baseball, but it was a great day for former Ole Miss Rebels in football.

Donte Moncrief was the only Ole Miss Rebel to be drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, but after all rounds of the draft were completed three more Rebels signed with NFL teams as free agents. Lets recap each former Rebel who was selected.

Donte Moncrief – Indianapolis Colts (90th overall pick, 26th pick in the third round)

That is what Rebel fans will be saying to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck this coming soon. Late on Friday night, the Colts selected Donte Moncrief as the 90th overall pick and the 26th pick in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft. It was expected for Moncrief to go late in the 2nd round or early in the 3rd. He may have wished to go a little higher in the rounds, but I am sure he is true blessed to have made it.

Moncrief is a native of Raleigh, Mississippi and opted out his senior year at Ole Miss to join the NFL. It was a decision skeptical by some fans, but many knew his reasons behind his decision were coherent. Moncrief is 6-3, 226 lbs. and is a down field threat for secondaries. He has great speed and can cause mismatches down field. He should make a great fit for Andrew Luck and the Colt offense.

Moncrief finished his final two years at Ole Miss as the leading receiver in yardage. In 2013, Moncrief pulled in 938 total receiving yards with 59 catches, and picked up 6 touchdowns. The same year, Moncrief finished 5th in the SEC in receiving yards per game (72.2). An interesting stat to back Moncrief’s deep threat skills is that of his last 16 touchdown catches, 13 of them came from outside 20 yards.

Jeff Scott – Cincinnati Bengals (Undrafted Free Agent)

Mandatory Credit: Spruce Derden-USA TODAY SportsJeff Scott was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent. Jeff Scott may not have the height or weight, but he sure does have speed. That might be what Cincinnati needs to make their offense click.

Scott was undoubtedly the Rebels best running back in 2012, and could have had more success in 2013 if it weren’t for injuries midway through the season. Scott’s highlight games in 2013 came at the beginning of the season against Vanderbilt and Texas.

Scott hails from Miami, Florida and is 5-7, and weighs in at 162 lbs. The Bengals may use Scott as wide receiver instead of his primary position of running back at Ole Miss. It would be a replica of Dexter McCluster who was comparable in size as to Scott and switched from Ole Miss running back to wide receiver in the NFL. Like McCluster, Scott has great hands and good foot work to build into a receiver position.

Emmanuel McCray – St. Louis Rams (Undrafted Free Agent)

Ole Miss defeated Arkansas 30-27. Mandatory Credit: Beth Hall-USA TODAY SportsIt was not shocking that Emmanuel McCray was selected by an NFL team this early in the free agent signee stage. The 6-3, 320 pound native of Jackson played in 38 games and 17 starts as left tackle in his career at Ole Miss. He was selected to play in the 2014 Medal of Honor Bowl. McCray was a contributor to two of the top three seasons in Ole Miss history in total yardage.

St. Louis will be getting a multitasking offensive linemen in McCray. He has the ability to easily switch from tackle to guard, as he had to do in 2013 at Ole Miss due to depth issues. McCray may not wow you in every aspect of the blocking game, but is very durable. In 2013, he showed major improvements in the pass rush (protecting Bo Wallace from getting blitzed on his ass), and it was notable in the Music City Bowl game against Georgia Tech, where he had to step in and replace Laremy Tunsil.

Pierce Burton – Minnesota Vikings (Undrafted Free Agent)

Mandatory Credit: Spruce Derden-USA TODAY SportsLike the Rams, the Vikings were looking for a durable offensive linemen to fill in depth, and known for little injuries. That is exactly what Minnesota will get with Pierce Burton. Also like McCray, Burton may not wow you in size, but his durability makes up for that. Burton has great foot work and has made great strides in improvement in pass rushing skills.

The 6-2, 290 pound Sacramento, California native started all 26 games at right tackle after transferring to Ole Miss from the City College of San Francisco. Burton, who picked Ole Miss over teams like Florida and Virgina Tech, was one of Hugh Freeze’s biggest commits in his first year of era at Ole Miss.

UPDATE – 5/11/2014

Ja’mes Logan – New England Patriots (Undrafted Free Agent)

Oct 12, 2013; Oxford, MS, USA; Ole Miss Rebels wide receiver Ja’mes Logan (85) waits at the line for the next play call during the game against the Texas A&M Aggies at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Texas A&M Aggies defeated the Ole Miss Rebels 41-48. Mandatory Credit: Spruce Derden-USA TODAY SportsWe are glad to announce that a fifth Ole Miss Rebel will be entering the NFL in 2014. This afternoon on Mother’s Day, Ja’mes Logan received the phone call that he will be joining the New England Patriots.

We feel New England is a great fit for Logan. He will have the opportunity of receiving passes from one the best quarterbacks in the league, Tom Brady. This is a team that always seems to be a championship contender that Logan will going to and he will be on the same offense as former Rebel teammate Brandon Bolden, running back for the Patriots.

Even though Logan missed the Music City Bowl in 2013, the regular season was his best as a Rebel. Logan, who is 6-3 and 183 pounds and hails from Houston, Texas, finished his senior season with 583 total receiving yards and added three touchdown catches. He was the other down-field threat as teammate Donte Moncrief was during their years at Ole Miss. Logan has good hands and great speed that gives him threat, something the Patriots could be looking for in their receivers.

We will keep you updated on this post if more Rebels get the call.
We are very proud of these Rebels making their dreams come true, by having the opportunity to play on the biggest stages in the land. There are still a few former Rebels awaiting that call. Here is the 2014 Rebel class still on the free agent list:

Mike Marry
Evan Swindell
Charles Swayer
Cameron Whigham
Tyler Campbell
Jack Nusimer
Dehederet Collins
