Ole Miss Rebels All-Millennial Football Team
A defensive line that is able to apply pressure on the quarterback and stop the run is the recipe for a great defense. You can’t win consistently in the SEC without a formidable defensive line. Here’s my list.
Defensive Line
First Team:
Derrick Burgess
Burgess barely made the criteria for this list since his senior year was in 2000. But he definitely deserves to be on the list. He led the Rebels with 9.5 sacks during his senior season. He finished his career with 178 tackles and 17.5 sacks. He even managed to swipe two interception from the defensive end position. Burgess gave offenses fits at the turn of the century.
Peria Jerry
The other part of the phenomenal Jerry brothers from South Panola, Peria was a beast on the defensive line. The All-American was hampered by injury the first couple of years on campus. But once he became healthy he showed why he was so highly recruited.
Marquis Haynes
Jessie Mitchell
Second Team:
Kentrell Lockett
This is one of those picks that is done simply based on a player’s leadership and resolve. Lockett was a player who had to deal with injury. His career spanned over six years. He was never quite the same after injury to his ACL in 2010. But when he was healthy he proved his worth and was on his way to a great career. It was great seeing him named a captain in 2011.
Robert Nkemdiche
Nkemdiche had the skills to be at the top of this list. His resume shows that he was all-everything while at Ole Miss. And maybe I’m being hard on him, but it seemed that if he was completely focused he could have been legendary. That being said, we have never seen such a physical beast as Mr. Nkemdiche. And when he was locked-in he gave offenses nightmares. Plus he did score a couple of times on offense.
