Former Ole Miss standout Seth Smith has been traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Baltimore Orioles. The former MLB Rebel is looking to make an impact on the O’s.

The Seattle Mariners are in a win-now mode with Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager, and Nelson Cruz on the roster. Seattle has the rotation to compete in the American League West. Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma are two elite pitchers who can compete for a Cy Young award.

But to kickstart their efforts, the Mariners are trading away some of their pieces. Outfielder Seth Smith was traded for Yovani Gallardo of the Baltimore Orioles.

This is one of the few trades that could prove to be helpful for both teams. The Mariners have been attempting to bolster their rotation ever since trading Tijuan Walker to the Arizona Diamondbacks in November.

Gallardo was an elite arm but has recently regressed. The M’s are hoping that Gallardo returns to the form that earned him an All-Star appearance in 2010.

Outfielders have improved when being acquired by the Orioles in the past. One example of that is Mark Trumbo, who led the MLB in home runs last season as an Oriole.

Smith will join Trumbo and Adam Jones in the outfield for the O’s, playing under manager Buck Showalter.

The Orioles are attempting to fight for the AL East with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Smith should be a good addition to the Orioles. It will be interesting to see how well he plays in Baltimore.
