Ole Miss Baseball: Rebs Get Win Over Little Rock, Host MSU

After dropping 2 of 3 games in the Kentucky series, #19 Ole Miss baseball (16-9) found itself in a midweek duel with the Little Rock Trojans (9-16). Sophomore Micheal Fitzsimmons singled a walk-off pinch hit in the bottom of the 10th to give the Rebels the win. #19 Ole Miss welcomes MSU to Swayze Field in a huge in-state rivalry series beginning Thursday night.

In college baseball, you can never underestimate a team based on their win/loss record. Ole Miss baseball skipper Mike Bianco knows this and had his Rebels ready against the Trojans Wednesday morning. Over 6,000 area elementary students were present for the 11am first pitch at Swayze, as the highlight of School Day at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss was returning home off the road after dropping 3 of 4 road games last week. With Mississippi State coming to Swayze this week, Ole Miss needed the win on Wednesday to create momentum. Of course, there was no shortage of drama as the game would be forced into extra play after 9 innings.

Freshman Greer Holston (1-0) drew the start for the Rebels and would shine on the mound. Holston went 5.1 scoreless innings allowing only 3 hits, while recording 3 Ks.

In total, six Rebel pitchers would see duty on the rubber, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits. Conner Green, Sean Johnson, Will Stokes, and Dallas Woolfolk found time on the mound in before extra innings.

The win would go to Oxford native Houston Roth (1-0) who entered the game in the 10th inning. Roth struck-out the side to secure his first win as a Rebel.

10 different Little Rock pitchers would see action in the game, allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits. Up 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Little Rock pitching would walk in 2 runs to allow the Rebels to tie the contest. However in the bottom of the 9th, LR pitching got out of a jam and found themselves in extra innings.

Ole Miss Baseball Is A Hit

Rebel bats were looking better Wednesday against Little Rock. Two Rebels would chalk multiple hits in the contest with Colby Bortles going 2 for 4 at the plate and Cole Zabowski going 2 for 5 with an RBI. Tate Blackman would go 1 for 5 with an RBI.

Altogether 7 Rebels would tally hits in the game, but none bigger than the walk off single by Michael Fitsimmons who entered the line-up in the 10th inning to pinch-hit for Bortles. Fitsimmons would jack a shot into left to drive in the winning run.

Here Comes Trouble?

#19 Ole Miss baseball welcomes Mississippi State to Swayze this week. Coming off huge midweek 8-3 win over Memphis, social media has already been set ablaze with chatter. Of course, Ole Miss dropped both of its games to Memphis early in the season.

First Pitch is scheduled for 7pm CT Thursday night with the game being televised on ESPNU. Students in the outfield lounge, get ready for lumber this weekend so bring your brew. Oh yeah, please refrain from wasting your shrimp and beer on mutts. Save it for the beer showers.
