Ole Miss baseball has been on a roll lately and it continued Tuesday night in Hattiesburg as the Rebels defeated #16 USM for the second time in as many weeks. The win pushed the Rebel’s win-streak to 5 games, which is very good. The momentum will come in handy as the Rebels travel to #8 LSU for a weekend SEC series.

Ole Miss baseball has been dealing with hitting issues for several weeks. However, the hitting is no longer a problem. The hitting has translated into fewer base-runners being stranded and of course, a 5-game winning streak. Of course, the increase in offensive production has also taken pressure off a powerful, yet young pitching staff.

Ole Miss (21-12, 6-6) has found itself facing a weekend road series against the #8 LSU Tigers in Red Stick. Consistent and productive hitting will be the key into making the LSU series interesting and possibly catching the three teams tied for the lead in the SEC West. However, for now, lets enjoy the win and season sweep over #16 Southern Mississippi and look at how it went down.

On The Mound

More from Ole Miss Baseball

Greer Holston drew the start for the Rebels on the hill Tuesday night. Holston would pitch 6.0 innings of scoreless duty, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4 Golden Eagle batters. He did have 3 walks in the contest. Holston picked up the win for his 97 pitch count effort on the mound.

According to OleMissSports.com, Southern Miss is one of the best offensive teams in the nation at (10.9) hits per game, (8.0) runs per game and an unreal (46) HRs! Even so, Holston was hot on the hill and working hard to keep his scoreless effort, he pitched out of several jams.

Brady Feigl received the call in the 7th and would pitch a solid 3.0 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits while etching 5 Ks. Apparently, we have a pretty good pitching corp. (Tongue in cheek.) Like we didn’t already know that.

In The Box

The Rebels have managed to work themselves into a consistent hitting team over the past 5 games. As stated before, the hitting overall has improved and the Rebels have used it in combination with a strong pitching corp to be successful. And yes, a 5-game winning streak is successful at this point in the season. Especially when you consider two of those wins came over #16 USM.

Tuesday night the Rebels took advantage of the plate and a really good Golden Eagle piching staff by acquiring 8 hits. Statistically, Nick Fortes had the biggest night at the plate, going 2 for 4 and rattling in 2 RBIs. Will Golsan also knocked in 2 RBIs, going 1 for 5 at the plate with an HR. Ryan Olenek would go 2 for 4 at the plate, while Tate Blackman went 1 for 5.

Red Stick On The Menu

The #8 LSU Bayou Bengals welcome Ole Miss in a weekending SEC series. The #8 LSU Tigers are currently 1-game behind in the SEC West and with a 7-5 SEC record, and only one game ahead of the Ole Miss Rebels who are ranked 3rd at an even 6-6. This series stands to be the most pivotal at this point. However, the Rebels have to be able to hit the ball in order to see their success continue.

First pitch for game-1 from Baton Rouge, this Thursday evening, is set for 6:30pm CT. For now, the game will be televised on SECN+.
