#4 Is Our Defense That Bad?

No, our defense is not that bad. However, they do still need more work to become the Landshark defenses we remember from the past. Remember, Chucky Mullins Courage Award winner, Marquis Haynes was out for the Grove Bowl and our success in the new McGriff defense hinges on him. Marquis will be a powerhouse on the defensive and become the catalyst for this defense.

Of course, there are other key components which are necessary for the Ole Miss defense to have success on the field. The main concern is lack of experience on the depth chart. 12 game with 8 being SEC games will be a tough schedule without depth.

Last season, we saw within the first quarter of the first game against FSU what injuries can do to decimate a defensive unit. Coach McGriff addressed this in his Grove Bowl presser.

This is not a sprint with McGriff and the defense. It’s a marathon. There are certain aspects of having McGriff as a DC which may take time. Certainly, recruiting will be a focal point for Freeze and McGriff going forward. However, future recruiting has no bearing on the defensive play of this upcoming season. I do believe we will be much better than last season if we stay healthy.
