Ole Miss Football: Cupcakes the Rebels need to blacklist
By John Gillon
Ole Miss football plays in the toughest division and best conference in the NCAA, the SEC West. When competing in such a tough division, teams usually schedule a few cupcakes every year.
The phenomenon is so popular that the teams were given a nickname. The nickname is cupcake, and no this is not a team made up of collegiate Kevin Durant’s.
These smaller teams are paid handsomely to play their bigger counterparts. The cupcakes come to get a paycheck and a hefty beating.
Competition is good, I know, but so are these arranged shellackings. The payday’s the lesser teams receive usually make up most of their budget for the year.
However, David does occasionally slay Goliath. When this happens, the masses celebrate. Okay, everyone but fans of said Goliath. Several teams have built reputations for being an exceptionally bitter cupcake. I’m looking at you Appalachian State, North Dakota State, and Jacksonville State.
In the spirit of these cupcakes, I’ve compiled a list of teams Ole Miss football should blacklist.
Honorable Mention: South Alabama
Every Ole Miss fan remembers what South Alabama pulled off last September.
South Alabama upset our instate arch-nemesis. The upset made us all laugh until we realized we open the 2017 season with South Alabama. Don’t get any ideas Ole Miss, nobody likes a copycat.
South Alabama was very schizophrenic in 2016. They upset MSU and San Diego State, but lost to Georgia Southern.
Ole Miss plays South Alabama in 2017, but may want to think twice about any future showdowns.
