Ole Miss football fans are anxious to get a look at the new defense in Oxford. With ‘Crimedawg’ in control of the D we can certainly expect to see a drastic improvement from last season.

Ole Miss football was in defensive turmoil last season. It became abundantly within the first few weeks of 2016 it was going to be a long year. It was. Giving up huge leads was more than many of us could handle. Especially when we knew the wheels had fallen off and it would only get worse. Of course, it did. We finished out our season 5-7 and with a 55-20 shellacking at the hands of our rivals from TSBU.

It was obvious to many of us associated with Ole Miss football, some defensive coaches had given up completely. It didn’t happen in 2016 but had actually begun in 2015. Like Andrew, a friend of mine reminded me, “4th and 25 didn’t beat Ole Miss when we played Arkansas that year, it was giving up the 500+ yards of passing for the entire game!”

We all know Dave Wommack was a great coach for a time, but he checked out on Ole Miss football that season. Sure, they had some really great wins and a series of defensive highlight reels. I mean that was the defense which crippled one of the top offenses in the nation in the Sugar Bowl that year. However, as Andrew eloquently put it, “An average defense against Arkansas would have gotten us to Atlanta.” And he makes a great point!
