Ole Miss Football: A Positive Look At The New Crimedawg Defense
Secondary Will Be Better
The other area of concern for many Ole Miss football fans is with the secondary. Last season was a far cry from 2014 and 2015. Between injuries and lack of depth our secondary was usually gassed in the second half of games. If you watched very much Ole Miss football last season then you already know we have to get better there. This season I expect us to be much better than last season. However, there has to be consistency.
Last season there were moments when defensive backs were completely out of position on plays. Poor tackling was also a serious problem with the secondary last season. I expect that to be a major focus this season under Crimedawg and Co-DC and secondary coach Jason Jones. Of course, Jones worked with corner-backs last season and in the past has produced some great talent at the position.
Crazy Talent
I’m excited about our secondary this season simply because coach McGriff is the defensive coordinator now and his expertise is DBs. Between he and coach Jones I believe this secondary will be much more physical and aggressive.
With the return of CJ Hampton, AJ Moore and a healthy Ken Webster we know what we are getting back key players in this new secondary. Also we will have juniors CJ Moore and Cam Ordway and sophomore Jaylon Jones returning. There is experience in this secondary and some talented young depth in Breon Dixon and DD Bowie.
This stands to be a great season if we see a definitive improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Of course, the beginning of the Landshark resurgence begins this Saturday September 2 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels will host the South Alabama Jaguars in a 6:30 pm kickoff. Hotty Toddy!
