NEW ORLEANS, LA – JANUARY 01: Gary Wunderlich

Special Teams Struggles

We hate to bring negative attention to a part of the game which hinges mostly on the leg of one player. However, Gary Wunderlich continues to struggle at the tee. Once again this is something which carried over from week-one as we watched Wunderlich miss a very make-able FG and missed PAT.

Against UT-Martin Wunderlich’s woes continued as he missed on a 37 yard FG early in the 2nd quarter. However, he did connect later on a 21 yarder. Kicking FGs is a lot like golf. Once it gets in your head it can affect your game. Gary is one of the top kickers in the nation and we know he’ll figure it out.

Other Special Teams Notes

In an effort to remain positive about special teams I want to point out a few positives from the UT-Martin game. Number 1, we didn’t miss any PATs. Number 2, we only punted twice. Two different punters averaged 49.0 yards per punt. Number 3, Jaylon Jones continues to impress on kickoff returns. Jaylon had 2 returns for 54 yards on the day. It’s just a matter of time before he breaks out again for a score.

Well there you have my takeaways from Saturday’s game against the UT-Martin Skyhawks. Congrats to Shea on his record-setting afternoon. I look forward to seeing him against the Cal Bears this Saturday. Of course, the Rebels are traveling to Berkeley, California to take on a stout Pac-12 foe in the Bears. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30CT and will be televised on ESPN. Hotty Toddy!
