Ole Miss basketball found themselves fighting for third place in the MGM Resorts International Main Event against the Rice Owls. Ole Miss had something to prove in the consolation game.

Ole Miss basketball fans were hoping to see the Rebels play a good game this past Wednesday  night in the consolation game of the MGM Resorts International Main Event. The 4-1 Rebels were coming off a devastating loss to the Utah Runnin’ Utes. Wednesday night of the Vegas tourney the Rebels found themselves taking on the 1-4 Rice Owls. Rice was coming off a blowout loss to UNLV.

Of course, the Rebels wasted no time establishing their game plan against the Owls and jumped out to an early lead. Even though they did trail at one point in the first half, they managed a comeback. The Rebels found themselves up 40-35 at the half. The second half was more of the same and the Rebels came home from Vegas with a huge 79-62 win.

The Rebels have shown they can play hard. They have established themselves as a typical second half Andy Kennedy team which we’ve seen from the past. However, they are young and still learning as they go. We can expect great things as they continue to play together. Of course, before we look ahead let’s look at the Rice game by the numbers.

By The Numbers

Of course when you win a blowout you expect the numbers to reflect it on both sides of the ball. The Rebels as a team shot 29 of 60 or 48.6% from the field. In comparison because of a very strong and aggressive defense they held Rice to 21 of 63 or 33.3%.

The Rebels did struggle somewhat from the charity stripe shooting 9 of 14 or 63.4%. However, they shot fair from the arc hitting 12 of 32 or 37.5%.

However, three Rebels hit double-digits in scoring in the game. Deandre Burnett led all scoring for the Rebels with 18 points on the night. He also had 5 rebounds, 8 assists and a steal.

Terence Davis had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 blocked shot and 2 steals. Devontae Shuler had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the game.

Other Rebels who contributed greatly in the blowout win were Justas Furmanavicius who had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Markell Crawford had 7 points with 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Of course, Marcanvis Hymon had a big night with 9 boards. Hymon also had 7 points to go with his 3 blocks and a steal.

More Hoops Tonight

With so much focus being placed on the football program over the past week with the Egg Bowl and Matt Luke being named head coach many fans have forgotten it’s basketball season. However, basketball season is in full swing and the Rebels are rolling.
