Ole Miss football found itself without a linebackers coach with the departure of Bradley Dale Peveto to Texas A&M. Luckily, the Rebels just hired a new one.

At the end of every college football season there are staff changes. For Ole Miss football these have been very minimal so far. In fact Ole Miss had actually added assistant coach Charles Clark to handle secondary. Naturally, when Peveto left for TAMU it opened up the linebacker coaches and special teams spots.

Of course, Ole Miss wasted no time finding their new coach. Monday Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke announced he had found the man for the job. Enter coach Jon Sumrall who was the former assistant head coach/linebackers coach at Troy for the past three seasons.

Prior to his tenure at Troy, Jon Sumrall was also at Tulane. Of course, both Troy and Tulane have been known for their tough defenses in recent years. Part of that success was a result of coach Sumrall and his expertise with the linebacker position.

According to OleMissSports.com, Troy finished the 2017 season with the No.1 red-zone defense (.614) in the nation. It was their second consecutive season to do so. In addition they also ranked 2nd in tackles for loss per game (8.6), 7th in rush defense (105.3), 11th in scoring defense and 24th in total defense.

Of course, if you look at his defenses at Tulane the numbers are as equally impressive. Sumrall also served on the staff of the University of San Diego for five seasons prior to being hired by Tulane. Coach Sumrall is a bright young coach who has shown results everywhere he’s been.

Good Young Coach

The Ole Miss defense has needed a good linebacker coach who will be around for the long haul and the players can relate better to. Coach Sumrall brings that aspect to the Ole Miss staff. His players want to play hard for him and of course the Rebels need that on defense. Although it hasn’t been officially announced it is suspected Sumrall will also work with special teams.
