Saturday against Texas Ole Miss basketball failed to get over the road hump which has kept the Rebels win-less in true road games so far this season.

It’s no big secret Ole Miss basketball (11-10, 4-4) has struggled on the road this season. The Rebels can’t quite seem to shake whatever it is which has given them a 0-6 record in true road games. Of course, road games are naturally a harder win but you usually do win some of them. The Rebels had hoped to get a good win over the Longhorns although it didn’t happen. Texas (14-7, 4-4) topped Ole Miss 85-72.

Although the Rebels started the game and played solid early the defense fell apart late in the half. The Longhorns took a 45-36 lead into the break. Ole Miss struggled shooting in the second and were as much as 18 points down with under 5:00 minutes to go in the contest.

The Rebels fought but couldn’t combat Mohamed Bamba who went for a double-double. Bamba had 25 points and 15 rebounds. Texas outscored Ole Miss 40-36 in the second half despite Ole Miss cutting the deficit some late. Texas also had three other players score in double-digits in the 85-72 win. Of course, we’ll look at the Rebels road loss by the numbers.

Sadly the most surprising numbers on the night weren’t the final score. Despite the game being a 13 point blowout the team numbers were relatively close. On the day Ole Miss basketball shot poorly from the field hitting only 25 of 64 shots for 39.1%. Texas went 28 of 63 for 44.4%.

Somehow the Rebels managed to out-shoot the Longhorns from beyond the arc although both teams shot well below average. Ole Miss was 8 of 21 for 38.1% from 3-point range while Texas went 10 of 31 for 32.3%.

From the charity stripe the numbers were once again very close for both teams. Texas who went to the line with more regularity shot 19 of 23 for 82.6%. Ole Miss shot 14 of 17 for 82.4%. Had the Rebels put the ball in the paint more in the second half they would have seen more trips to the free throw line.

Once again there were points left on the court because of poor shot decisions. Ole Miss had problems contending with Texas on both ends of the court and Texas defense stifled Ole Miss in the second half from the field. The really surprising number I mentioned earlier? 11 of 31 for 35.5%. It’s what the Rebels shot from the field in the field in the second half.

Rebels Individual Numbers

The Rebels only had two players score in double figures against the Longhorns. Deandre Burnett once again carried the team and led all scoring with 21 points. Burnett also had 3 rebounds and an assist. Dominik Olejniczak stepped up and had an outstanding game scoring 16 points. Olejniczak also had 6 boards, 2 assists, a blocked shot and a steal in the game.

Terence Davis added 7 points while pulling down 6 rebounds. Davis also had a blocked shot. Bruce Stevens and Markel Crawford each added 6 points. Stevens also had 1 rebound and 1 assist. Steven fouled out of the game. Crawford had 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

Breein Tyree and Devontae Shuler each added 5 points. Tyree had 1 rebound while Shuler had 3 rebounds and a steal. Marcanvis Hymon added 3 points with 3 rebounds while Justas Furmanavicius added 2 points, 4 rebounds and an assist. Furmanavicius also fouled out in the contest. DC Davis added 1 point and 1 rebound.

The Rebels once again played inconsistently on both ends of the court. Turnovers and poor shot decisions again were a problem for Ole Miss on the road. Coach Andy Kennedy and the Rebels have only 10 games remaining with 5 of those on the road. It’s becoming difficult to imagine the Rebels hitting the 20-win mark when they can’t win on the road.
