Ole Miss Baseball: No.4 Rebels Top Red Wolves In Midweek Road Game

No.4 Ole Miss baseball was back in action Tuesday night in a midweek road game in Jonesboro against the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Ole Miss baseball (40-13) was on the road for the last midweek match-up of the regular season at Arkansas State (18-30). The Rebels were looking to get the 13th midweek win of the 2018 season and did it in fine fashion. Behind four homers and 17 hits the Rebels picked up the 15-8 win. Now the Rebels have serious momentum as they turn their attention to the final SEC series of the regular season.

The Rebels wasted no time getting cranked up at the plate scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st. ASU answered with 1 run in the bottom of the frame but Ole Miss didn’t let up. Ole Miss added 1 run in the top of the 2nd to take the 4-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. The Red Wolves answered with 1 run in the bottom of the 2nd to cut the Rebels lead to 4-2 after 2 innings. The Rebels added 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to extend the lead to 6-2.

Ole Miss added another run in the top of the 5th to push the lead to 7-2. The Rebels poured on 3 runs in the top of the 6th to extend the lead to 10-2. ASU answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 10-6. The Rebels added 3 runs in the top of the 7th to make the lead 13-6 but the Red Wolves answered with 2 runs to narrow the Rebels lead to 13-8. Ole Miss added 2 more runs in the 8th to push the lead to 15-8 which ultimately was the final score.

Freshman lefty Jordan Fowler (5-0, 4.08) drew the start on the hill for the Rebels. Fowler went for 5.0 innings and allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits. Fowler had 4 Ks and 2 BB. Sophomore right-hander Austin Miller (1.93) entered in the 6th and went for 1.0 innings. Miller allowed 4 earned runs on 3 hits and had 3 Ks and 1 BB.

Junior right-hander Connor Green entered in the 7th and went 1.0 innings on the hill. Green allowed 2 earned runs on 1 hit. Freshman right-hander Max Cioffi (2.65) entered in the 8th and pitched 1.0 innings. Cioffi allowed no hits while etching 2 Ks and 1 BB. Senior Will Stokes (1-1, 7.29, 1) closed out the night on the hill for the Rebels entering in the 9th. Stokes allowed 1 hit and had 3 Ks.

At The Plate

On the night 8 Rebels combined for 17 hits with 7 Rebels collecting multiple hit games. Leading all Rebels at the plate was sophomore Grae Kessinger (.316, 6 HR) who went 3 for 4 (HR) with 3 RBI. Junior Nick Fortes (.299, 11 HR) went 3 for 5 at the plate with 1 RBI. Freshman Tyler Keenan  (.322, 8 HR) went 2 for 4 (HR) with 4 RBI while junior Michael Fitzsimmons (.476, 2 HR) also went 2 for 4 (HR) and 2 RBI.

Sophomores Cole Zabowski (.311, 7 HR) and Cooper Johnson (.224, 2 HR) both went 2 for 4 at the plate. Zabowski had 2 RBI. Junior Ryan Olenek (.396, 3 HR) went 2 for 5 while sophomore Thomas Dillard (.312, 12 HR) went 1 for 4 (HR) with 2 RBI. The Rebels bats were hot Tuesday night and will likely be this weekend as well.

No.4 Ole Miss baseball will be back in action later this week as they travel to Tuscaloosa for the final SEC series of the season.
