With the NCAA baseball tourney kicking off this weekend there aren’t many Rebels who are studying Ole Miss basketball, but they should be.

OK I know, the 2018 NCAA baseball tourney is kicking off this weekend and I’m wanting to talk Ole Miss basketball. Yes, I’m excited over the Ole Miss baseball team’s success this season and very much looking forward to the Oxford-regional this weekend. However, there is a success story of all its own when you look at Rebels hoops.

The amount of success new head coach Kermit Davis has had since his arrival in Oxford is already astounding. In his short time in Oxford he has reigned in the Ole Miss basketball program and is making strides. From the three-ring coaching circus we saw last season to now is incredible to say the least. OHT will take a look at where the program stands as of now.

This time last year we had no idea where we were headed as Ole Miss basketball unfurled. There were obvious underlying factors between coach Andy Kennedy and the Ole Miss admin which contributed to his bowing out as Ole Miss basketball head coach. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and we all saw the results of a lame-duck coach who literally ducked.

Now we fast forward to 2018 and we have a new head coach who is making a definitive statement since he’s been in Oxford. Coach Kermit Davis has already made a name for himself way before Oxford ever crossed his mind. Davis was head coach at MTSU for 15 seasons and had MTSU as a perennial power house.

A Look At Recruiting

This is where the bread meets the butter for the future of Ole Miss basketball.. As much as it is to have a new head coach and a totally different game plan. Now we have a whole new program. In just a few short weeks Kermit Davis has made his mark.

The 2018 Ole Miss basketball recruiting class was in shambles when Davis arrived in Oxford. However, Davis took the bottom ranked class in the SEC and pushed it the No.9 class in the SEC. The class also ranks 56th in the nation which is far better than could be expected. Davis also has a 4-star commit for the 2019 recruiting class which currently ranks 3rd in the SEC.
