Ole Miss baseball may be over but the season has just kicked off for a few Rebels as the 2018 Major League Draft is taking place.

Just a day removed from being eliminated from the Oxford-Regional baseball season continues for Ole Miss baseball. Now the action is coming in the form of the 2018 MLB Draft which has Rebels clearly in the mark. We knew there would be some Rebels who would come off the Ole Miss roster with this draft after a very successful season. Now, in the fourth round Nick Fortes has come off the board.

Nick Fortes has been solid behind the plate as a catcher and has performed admirably. However, Nick Fortes has also been solid at the plate as a hitter for the Rebels and is a very good base-runner. In fact, Fortes was named MVP for the 2018 SEC Tourney because of both offense and defense. There is little doubt the Miami Marlins are getting a great ball player in this MLB draft pick.

More On Fortes

More from Ole Miss Baseball

Out of Deland, Florida Nick Fortes has become one of the top catchers in the nation. Fortes was highly sought after coming out of high school and was ranked the No.95 player in the nation by Scout.com. At Deland as a senior Fortes hit an astounding .385 with 32 RBI. However, Fortes was even better as a junior hitting an amazing .512 with 40 RBI.

As a Rebel Fortes has been very complete on both sides of the ball. While being a legit catcher Fortes has also produced at the plate becoming a very good hitter. In 2018 Fortes has been clutch behind the plate for the Rebels starting 65 of 65 games. A very durable player with a very strong arm Fortes is a base-runners nightmare.

Fortes is a critical part of the success for the Rebels in 2018 and had an outstanding season. Nick Fortes hit .319 for the second consecutive season and had 11 HRs. Fortes is one of the most complete players on the 2018 Ole Miss baseball roster. Of course, coach Mike Bianco was also a catcher so we expect to have good catchers come and go. Although we hate to see a player like Fortes leave, we wish him the greatest of success.

Next: Better Than Expected...

In Closing

Personally, catcher is my favorite position. While pitchers get much of the glory in the game of baseball the catcher is essentially the QB. Everything revolves around the catcher. Fortes has become an integral part of the position and OHT hopes he does well in the MLB. Congrats to Nick Fortes and the Miami Marlins! Hotty Toddy!
