Ole Miss Football: Five Rebels On Defense Who Have Big Seasons
Ole Miss football is coming soon and despite the questions we have on the defensive side of the ball in 2018 there are players who will stand out.
Ole Miss football is now less than 40 days away and we are excited and anxious for it to begin. Of course there are questions which we have about the defense headed into the 2018 season. We are all ready to see those questions answered and hopefully they are in our favor. OHT believes we will see a vast improvement from last season even though the defense only returns 7 starters.
Even though there are gaps which have to be filled there will be Rebels who stand out on the defensive side of the ball. It remains to be seen how many players have standout seasons but we are picking out five. If we see any improvement at all in the Wesley McGriff defense then the number may be much greater.
Looking At The Five
Ole Miss Rebels Football
Our five begins on the front line with two defensive tackles. Our first is Josiah Coatney who measures in at 6’4 and 302 lbs. In 2017 Coatney was third on the defense in total tackles with 65 and 8 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Next up is Benito Jones. Jones measures 6’2 and 315 lbs. Benito finished out the 2017 season with 29 tackles with 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
Now we take a look at the linebacker position. Our linebacker plays in the middle and is due for a breakout season. He is Detric Bing-Dukes. Bing-Dukes measures in at 6’1 and 254 lbs. Bing-Dukes finished the 2017 season with 24 total tackles and 1 quarterback hurry.
Next we look into the defensive backfield. First up we look at Ken Webster at corner-back. Webster measures in at 5’11 and 194 lbs. In 2017 Webster finished the season with 29 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Webster also had 2 pass break ups and 2 pass deflections. Staying in the defensive backfield we look at newcomer Vernon Dasher at STAR. Dasher measures in 6’1 and 200 lbs. Dasher who signed in the early period with the 2018 class was on campus for spring practice and was impressive enough to make the number one spot on the depth chart for fall practice. We can expect him to have a great first season as a Rebel.
Wanting More In 2018
Of course, Ole Miss football fans we all hope to see the return of the Landshark D. We all want to see improvement from the 2017 season. If it happens this season it will begin with the success of these five players and others. Good luck to these five players and the rest of the Rebels defense in the 2018 season. The Rebels kick off their season September 1st as they take on Texas Tech in Houston, Texas. Hotty Toddy!
