Jake Gibbs, QB

Although Jake Gibbs might be known more for his baseball heroics he was also a punter and quarterback for Ole Miss football. Gibbs guided the Rebels to a 10-0-1 record during his senior season and a 1961 Sugar Bowl win over Rice. Gibbs scored both TDs in the 14-6 win. He was selected to the 1960 College Football All-American Team and was also named the SEC Player of the Year.

While Gibbs was drafted by both the Houston Oilers and Cleveland Browns he chose a career in the MLB with the New York Yankees where he played from 1962 to 1971. In 1971 Gibbs became head baseball coach and football recruiter and in 1972 led the Ole Miss baseball team to an SEC Championship and College World Series. Gibbs was named Coach of the Year and ultimately was named Coach of the Year again in 1977.
