Johnny Vaught, Head Coach

Johnny Vaught was a legendary coach for the Rebels from 1946 to 1970. Vaught was hired as an assistant coach in 1946 and was named head coach the following season. Vaught was also an interim head coach in 1973 and amassed an overall record of 190-61-12. Coach Vaught had a bowl record of 10-8 with 5 wins coming in the Sugar Bowl. Vaught was 19-2-4 over Miss State while he was head coach for Ole Miss football.

In his 25 seasons as Ole Miss head coach Vaught only had one losing season. During that time Vaught had four 10 win seasons and five 9 win seasons and won six SEC Championships in 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 and 1963. Of course, Vaught also won 3 national championships while in Oxford. Vaught was honored with the renaming of Hemingway Stadium to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Coach Vaught’s statue is just in front of the entrance of the M-Club outside the stadium.
