Showboat Boykin, FB

Arnold Leverne Boykin was born in Greenville Mississippi. Originally on the OM roster as a linebacker, he would later be moved to fullback. The Ole Miss coaches made a smart call in doing so. He was a fast and bruising runner who would hold the collegiate record for most rushing touchdowns in a game.

In the 1951 Egg Bowl game, against in-state rivals Mississippi State, Showboat rushed for 7 TDs. Boykin only carried the ball 14 times for an incredible 187 yards. His longest score of the day was a 85 yard scamper to the end-zone. He would score on six more touches in route to a 49-7 win over the Bulldogs.

My dad, who attended the Egg Bowl that day, said Mississippi State fans argued the Ole Miss coaches should have pulled Boykin after 4 TDs. OUCH! The record would stand for nearly 50 years, until it was broken by Howard Griffith in 1990. The Illinois running back would score 8 touchdowns against Southern Illinois.
