While Ole Miss football was in their bye week of the 2018 season this Grove Grinder looks at the pros and the cons of having a week off.

Ole Miss football was in their bye week this weekend and this Grove Grinder is dedicated to a week without the Rebels playing. Naturally, by the 8th week of the 2018 college football season there is a need for a break and a chance for players to get some much-needed rest, relaxation and recuperation. After an embarrassing loss to Auburn a chance to regroup is needed as well.

It is also a chance for Ole Miss football fans to get a little rest as well. There are a lot of Rebels fans who make every game including the away games and they can also use the break to catch a breath. It isn’t easy being a hardcore fan and when you figure all the miles which are travelled and the money spent it is nice to have a weekend off. Or is it?

The Pros of Bye Week

Naturally, after 8 games the Rebels needed a break. SEC football is not an easy gig and the walking wounded need a chance to heal. The Rebels are 5-3 and have 4 games left in the season.

There is an opportunity for coach Matt Luke and the Rebels to still have a great season but there have to be adjustments and tweaks made. Bye week is a perfect chance for the Rebels to fix the issues on both sides of the ball.

The Rebels have been decimated by injuries on both sides of the ball but especially on defense. Besides allowing players who have been seeing action while playing hurt to heal there is also a chance for the depth to get a little more action in practice.

Against the Auburn Tigers we watched as the Rebels defense played much better but there were some lapses in coverage which cost the Rebels in points and momentum. A bye week helps the defense to develop a better game-plan.

The Cons Of Bye Week

As with most Ole Miss football fans over the years we have become accustomed to different schedules and of course the dreaded bye week. It’s not easy having to be without Ole Miss football after you’ve had 8 straight weeks. Despite the bye week being needed it is not fully appreciated for what it does.

No this past weekend we were forced to watch some of the other SEC teams to get our weekly football fix. It wasn’t easy watching our foes in action and watching rivals win while the Rebels were sitting at home. Sitting at 5-3 makes most of us wanting more Ole Miss football and we haven’t even gotten to the best part of the season yet.

dark. Next. Season Predictions...

Ole Miss has some huge games coming and they are winnable games but the bye week is needed to get there. While it may not have been an easy weekend without Ole Miss football and having to watch our rivals win was uncomfortable, there is a long stretch ahead for this Rebels football team and things look good for Ole Miss this season. That is really good considering where we were just a year ago during bye week. Hotty Toddy!
