With the Holiday break coming soon Ole Miss basketball was back in action on the road against Illinois State Saturday night.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball (6-2) were back in action Saturday night as they faced the Illinois State Redbirds (6-5) on the road. Behind outstanding shooting and very good defense the Rebels picked up the 81-74 win which extends their current winning streak to three consecutive games.

Any win is a good win but for the Rebels Saturday nights win was huge. The Illinois State Redbirds are a very good team and have some impressive wins in the 2018-19 college basketball season. Illinois State entered the Saturday night matchup with their own four-game win streak which included wins over Boise State and BYU. Lets look at the Rebels win by the numbers.

As a team the Rebels shot .526 from the field while holding the Redbirds to just .413. Ole Miss shot .368 from the arc while the Redbirds shot .400 from three-point range. The Rebels were very good from the charity stripe hitting .933 while Illinois State shot just .632 from the free-throw line.

This Ole Miss basketball team is extremely  aggressive on both sides of the ball but they are still a young group and it shows in some of the other numbers. While the Rebels out-rebounded the Redbirds 39-31 the Rebels continue to lose the turnover battle from game to game. Against the Redbirds the Rebels committed 16 TOs while creating just 10.

If you’ve had the chance to watch this Rebels team play you can see this is a much better team from last season and they are beginning to gel. The team numbers will certainly begin to get better as they get more games under their belt. Lets look at the Rebels individual numbers.

 Rebels Individual Numbers

Saturday night there were three Rebels who saw double-digit scoring. Leading all Rebels was junior Breein Tyree who had 22 points to go with his 7 boards and 6 assists. Senior Terence Davis added 20 points and had 4 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Senior Bruce Stevens added 11 points with 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Junior Dominik Olejniczak added 9 points with 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.

Thru eight games we’ve seen the potential within this Ole Miss basketball program. Countless times we’ve heard fans comment on the intensity of the Rebels and how much faster the Rebels appear to be playing under coach Kermit Davis. Without a doubt this is a very talented team and they will find success this season should they continue to improve. This is going to be a fun team to watch going forward.
