Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball were back in action Tuesday night as they traveled to face the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball (18-8, 8-5) were looking for their fifth straight win in Columbia Tuesday night. The Rebels entered the midweek matchup coming off a 75-65 win over Missouri in Oxford. South Carolina (14-12, 9-4) entered the matchup coming off 84-77 home win over Texas A&M.

Despite starting strong and building a 13-2 lead the Rebels allowed the Gamecocks to get back in the game and South Carolina took a 40-32 lead into the locker room at the break. The second half was more of the same and the Gamecocks outscored the Rebels 39-32 to get the 79-64 SEC home win. Lets look at the game by the numbers.

In a 15 point loss we can’t really expect the numbers to look very good and they aren’t. As a team the Rebels shot just .371 from the field while the Gamecocks hit .421 of their shots. The Rebels shot just .217 from beyond the arc while South Carolina shot .474 from behind the 3-point line.

The one bright spot for Ole Miss was at the free-throw line where the Rebels shot .684 while the Gamecocks shot just .593 from the charity stripe.

South Carolina out-rebounded Ole Miss 46 to 38 while forcing 11 Rebels turnovers with 9 steals. The Rebels did force 10 Gamecocks turnovers but had only 3 steals in the game.

Individual Rebels Numbers

Against the Gamecocks there were two Rebels who scored in double-digits. Junior Breein Tyree led all Rebels with 19 points. Tyree also had 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots in the game. Senior Terence Davis added 18 points while pulling down 5 rebounds. Davis also had 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot.

Freshman Blake Hinson added 8 points while sophomore Devontae Shuler added 6 points in the game. Hinson had 1 rebound and 1 blocked shot while Shuler pulled down 7 rebounds. Shuler also had 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot.

Observations

It’s difficult to perceive how the Rebels played so poorly Tuesday night after coming off four straight wins. The Rebels looked out of sync after they gave up a 13-2 lead to start the game. We realized South Carolina on the road would be a tough game and the Rebels would have to play clean aggressive defense to have a shot at a win. It didn’t happen. Poor shooting from the field by the Rebels obviously played a huge part in the loss.

With just five games left in the regular season coach Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball will be back in action Saturday as they host Georgia.
