Ole Miss Basketball: Kermit Davis Named SEC Coach of the Year

Tuesday first year Ole Miss basketball head coach Kermit Davis was announced as the SEC Coach of the Year by the SEC offices.

Ole Miss basketball (20-11, 10-8) has been a pleasant surprise for Rebels fans this season. The Rebels are coming off a regular season ending road win over Mizzou which gave the Rebels the magical twentieth win and set them up for selection into the NCAA Tourney. After being selected in the preseason to finish last in the SEC the 2018-2019 season has been special to say the least.

Tuesday the SEC offices announced Kermit Davis had been named the SEC Coach of the Year for his first season success in Oxford. Coach Davis who was formerly head coach at Middle Tennessee State accepted the vacant position left open by former Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy. So far coach Kermit Davis has proven he is the right man for the job.

A Leakesville, Mississippi native and former player at Miss State, coach Kermit Davis is recognized as one of the top basketball coaches in the SEC and the nation. At Middle Tennessee State Davis led the Blue Raiders to league titles in seven of his last nine seasons.

An eight-time conference coach of the year, Kermit Davis is ranked 34th among active Division I head coaches with 403 career wins, including stints at MT, Idaho and Texas A&M. Davis ranks 11th nationally in winning percentage over the last three seasons and 13th nationally over the last seven seasons.

Kermit Davis coached 25 all-conference players and five players of the year at MTSU and signed 5 top-25 recruiting classes, including the No.11 class in 2004. Kermit Davis left MTSU as the all-time winningest coach for both the school and the Sun Belt Conference.

Tuesday the SEC all-conference teams were announced. Junior Breein Tyree was named as a SEC first team selection. Tyree is the Rebels leading scorer averaging 18.5 points per game which ranks him as 2nd in the SEC. Tyree also averages 3.0 boards and 2.9 assists per game.

Senior Terence Davis was named as a SEC second team selection. Davis is the Rebels leading rebounder and also leads the Rebels in assists. Davis averages 5.8 boards and 3.4 assists per game for the Rebels.

SEC Coach of the Year Kermit Davis and Ole Miss basketball will be back in action Thursday as they begin the SEC Tourney in Nashville. The Rebels open the tourney against Alabama.
