Ole Miss Softball: Rebels Fall In Epic Game-One Battle

Coach Mike Smith and No.22 Ole Miss softball were back in action Friday night as they faced off against the No.6 Florida Gators.

No.22 Ole Miss softball (22-9, 3-3) was back in action Friday night as the Rebels hosted No.6 Florida (29-6, 3-4) in the first game of the weekend SEC series at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. Coach Mike Smith and Ole Miss entered the game coming off a SEC road series where the Rebels split games against No.16 South Carolina. This series against Florida was expected to be a tough one and game-one was proof.

After a scoreless first inning the Gators got on the board first with 1 run in the top of the second to take the 1-0 lead. The Gators then added 1 run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0. The Rebels battled back with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2 where the game stayed thru regulation. In the top of the fifteenth the Gators added 3 runs to retake the lead and ultimately get the 5-2 win. OHT looks at the game by the numbers.

In the epic SEC game-one showdown there were 6 Rebels who combined for 9 hits with 2 Rebels recording multiple hit games. Leading all Rebels at the plate was senior Kylan Becker who went 3 for 6 with 2 RBI. Junior Kaylee Horton went 2 for 6 in the game. Sophomore Gabby Alvarez went 1 for 1 while sophomores Abbey Latham and Amanda Roth each went 1 for 6 at the plate. Freshman Tate Whitley also went 1 for 6 in the game.

In the circle senior right-hander Brittany Finney drew the game-one start for coach Mike Smith and the Rebels. Finney went 5.0 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 Ks. Junior left-hander Molly Jacobsen entered in the sixth and finished out the night in the circle. Jacobsen went for 10.0 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits with 11 Ks and 3 BB.

Coach Mike Smith and No.22 Ole Miss softball will be back in action for game-two Saturday as they look to even the series. First pitch from Oxford is set for 1pm CT and the game can be seen via SECN+. Good luck to the Rebels. Hotty Toddy!
