And The Rest

OHT recognizes the importance of a talented roster. Nobody knows when an injury can affect the entire lineup and gameplan. Luckily for Lane Kiffin and Jeff Lebby, they do have a very talented roster at the quarterback position. The Top-3 may look really good but the last four we will look at are equally as impressive but without quite as much experience. Here they are.

Kinkead Dent

Although Rebels fans haven’t had ample opportunity to see redshirt freshman Kinkead Dent (6’5, 194lbs) in action, he did in fact see his Rebels debut in 2019. Against New Mexico State Dent entered the game and took snaps in which he had 2 carries on the ground for 9 yards. This is another Ole Miss quarterback who may not be experienced but is still very talented.

Out of Jackson Academy, Dent was ranked as the No.1 pro-style quarterback in Mississippi by 247Sports Composite. As a senior Dent completed 88 of 170 attempts for 1,365 yards while rushing for 909 yards with 26 total touchdowns. While quarterback at Jackson Academy Dent compiled 3,855 yards passing, 1,757 yards rushing, and 60 total touchdowns. Because of his size, Dent could be a threat running the new Kiffin/Lebby offense.

Sellers Shy

Many Rebels fans may not know his name or even his number but redshirt freshman Sellers Shy (6’1, 173lbs) did take the field in 2019. Against New Mexico State, Shy entered the game late in a backup role but produced no statistics. However, Shy did take the field. It was obvious the last Ole Miss staff saw something in practice that made them want to see more in a game situation. Once again, lack of experience doesn’t negate talent, and Shy is very talented.

Out of Memphis University School, Shy was a true athlete earning 4 letters in football while also earning 9 others in basketball, lacrosse, and track to combine for 13 total letters in high school. Shy’s senior season as MUS quarterback he threw for 2,739 yards and had 33 total touchdowns. Shy was also a two-time Tennessee state champion in the 400-meter dash. Shy is more than a ripple in the Ole Miss quarterback conversation.

Brice Johnson

Redshirt freshman Brice Johnson (6’1, 187lbs) is another Ole Miss quarterback who made his debut in 2019 against New Mexico State. However, Johnson was in a reserve role and produced no stats. Like the others who saw action during the season, we know the former staff wanted to see more of Johnson other than in practice. The reason being they knew the talent level of the young walkon.

Out of Greenville, Mississippi and Saint Joseph Catholic School, Johnson was prolific. As a four-year starter, Johnson passed for over 8,500 yards and totaled an amazing 153 total touchdowns. Johnson’s senior season was equally as impressive with him throwing 2,632 yards with 52 total touchdowns. Johnson was named Offensive MVP by the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools for his efforts in his senior season. Johnson is another QB on the Rebels roster to watch for in 2020 and beyond.

Kade Renfro

True freshman Kade Renfro (6’4, 195lbs) was a product of the 2020 Ole Miss recruiting class. Renfro was an early enrollee at midterm and was expected to take part in the spring practices. Many Ole Miss football fans were looking forward to seeing him in action and finding out if the hype was really true. We have to believe it is based on what brought him to Oxford, Ole Miss football, and Kiffin and especially Lebby who was previously at UCF.

Hailing from Desdemona, Texas and Stephenville High School Renfro was rated as a 3-star by both ESPN and 247Sports. Renfro was ranked as the No.27 pro-style quarterback in the nation while ranked as the No.44 pocket passer in the nation by ESPN. Through his final two seasons with Stephenville, Renfro threw for 4,212 yards and 34 touchdowns. It is easy to see why he was being recruited by and received offers from Florida State and UCF especially, among others.
