At this point, transfer portal news seems to be Ole Miss news. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels coaching staff have been busy early in the offseason snagging transfers from the portal left and right.
The latest addition to the Ole Miss football roster is Georgia Tech transfer cornerback Zamari Walton. Walton is the third defensive back to be added from the transfer portal along with Miami of Ohio cornerback John Saunders and North Texas defensive back DeShawn Gaddie.
This addition adds some much-needed depth and experience to the Rebels’ secondary after losing safeties AJ Finley and Otis Reese to graduation as well as cornerback Miles Battle who transferred to Utah earlier this month.
Along with the departures, cornerback Davison Igbinosun, who was the Rebels highest rated recruit from a year ago currently has his name in the transfer portal and is likely to be leaving as well.
Safety Tysheem Johnson also has his name in the portal making depth a concern at defensive back for the Rebels.
Originally from Melbourne, Florida, Walton was rated as a three-star prospect by ESPN coming out of high school. Standing at 6’3, 185 pounds, he has great length to match up with some of the SEC’s best receivers.
As mentioned above, he will bring some much-needed experience to the Ole Miss football secondary as he is entering his sixth and final year of college football. In 2018, Walton appeared in 3 games before being redshirted, granting him an extra year of eligibility.
Walton was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets, appearing in 39 total games since 2019. He totaled 123 tackles and 17 pass deflections in his career at Georgia Tech. It is unclear yet who the Rebels’ starters will be at cornerback in 2023 but expect Walton to be at the top of the list come August.
