Ole Miss News: Baseball wins fourth in a row, Lady Rebels hope for tourney bid
Catching you up on the latest Ole Miss news: Ole Miss baseball beats Southern Miss to make it four wins in a row.
Ole Miss baseball is on a four-game win streak after their latest win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Entering the matchup the Rebels still sat at fourth overall in the Country while Southern Miss came in with an 8-3 record and was ranked 22nd.
After the first inning, Southern Miss would lead 1-0 but that would be the last lead they held in the contest as the Rebels would go on a scoring frenzy and jump out to a considerable lead at 8-1 after five innings.
The Golden Eagles would do their best to cut the deficit driving in four runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it 8-5. Ultimately they couldn’t stop the bleeding and the high-powered bats for Ole Miss would end up extending the lead again and winning the game 11-5.
Ole Miss pitcher JT Quinn got the start on the mound and he will remain perfect at 3-0 on the year. The Rebels move on to an 11-2 record overall on the season. Rebel baseball is back in action this weekend at home with a three-game series against Purdue.
More Ole Miss news: After falling to South Carolina in the SEC tournament the Lady Rebels will await the results of Selection Sunday.
After finishing an impressive regular season at 23-7 overall, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team had a decent run in the SEC tournament before falling to top-ranked South Carolina.
The Lady Rebels only had to play two games in the tournament due to being the fourth overall seed. They would make relatively easy work out of 13-seed Texas A&M in the quarterfinal round winning 77-60 before being matched up with juggernaut South Carolina in the semi-finals.
They would go on to lose to the Gamecocks 80-51, a much different result the second time around after taking South Carolina to overtime earlier this season.
South Carolina entered the tournament a perfect 30-0 and has remained in the number one ranking spot all year. After beating Tennessee to secure the SEC championship they will now have the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
With the loss, the Lady Rebels will now wait anxiously to have their name called on Selection Sunday to see if they will receive a bid to the NCAA tournament, but the odds seem likely after finishing with the same win-loss record a year ago and they were selected into the tournament.
Selection Sunday for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament will be Sunday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
