The most recent stretch for Ole Miss baseball includes an 0-3 sweep by LSU and dropping their fourth game against in-state rival Mississippi State.
“Mentally and emotionally, it’s tough. But they’ve competed and showed up. We just have to play better.” This was the quote from Ole Miss baseball head coach Mike Bianco after another series sweep by an SEC opponent. It’s been quite the fall-off for last year’s National Champions.
This past weekend the Rebels were swept yet again by another conference opponent. Ole Miss went 0-3 in the series being outscored 22 runs to 13 by the LSU Tigers. LSU punched in three runs in the top of the ninth inning to erase a two-run Ole Miss lead and defeat the Rebels 7-6 on Sunday to finish the sweep.
Immediately following the series against LSU, Ole Miss would face go on to face rival Mississippi State for the fourth time this year on Tuesday in Pearl, Mississippi. After going 1-2 in a three-game series against the Bulldogs a week and a half prior, Ole Miss had a chance to square up the series and capture the Governor’s Cup.
The normally offense-heavy Rebels went on to score just one run in the contest, dropping the game 2-1 against the Bulldogs to give Mississippi State the season series win going 3-1 against Ole Miss overall on the year.
The nightmarish season continues for Ole Miss baseball bringing their total record on the year to 21-20 and 3-15 in the SEC. If you eliminate the first 16 games of the year in which the Rebels started 14-2, they have been 7-18 since.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier down the stretch as they will wrap up the season playing series against SEC opponents Georgia, Auburn, Missouri, and Alabama.
Ole Miss baseball will host the 23-18 Georgia Bulldogs this weekend for a three-game series at Swayze Field beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CST.
