Ole Miss Baseball wins first SEC series of the year against Georgia
The Ole Miss baseball team won their first conference series of the year against the Georgia Bulldogs this past weekend to keep their record above .500.
It’s been a rough season for the Ole Miss baseball squad as they’ve struggled mightily in conference play this year. They hadn’t won a conference series against any SEC opponent in 2023 before this past weekend’s series matchup against Georgia.
Not only had they not won a conference series, but they also had just three wins in 18 total games against SEC opponents. Saying that this season has been a disappointment for the Rebels would be quite an understatement after winning a National Championship just a year ago.
While they’ve been on a downward spiral as of late, they were able to pull together and squeak out their first SEC series win by going 2-1 against the Bulldogs this past weekend.
The Rebels kicked things off on Friday with a 7-3 win. Xavier Rivas got the start for Ole Miss and finished with seven strikeouts and four walks. He gave up only six hits that included the two early runs. Georgia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Ole Miss would have it tied up 2-2 entering the fourth and would run away with the game from there.
On Saturday Georgia would tie the series up 1-1 winning the game with the same score as Friday’s contest at 7-3. Pitcher JT Quinn got the start on the mound for the Rebels and before this contest was previously unbeaten in his starts with three wins.
On Sunday the game was all tied up at 7-7 after the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Rebels took over in the bottom of the ninth and TJ McCants hit a single that would send in Judd Utermark and Ole Miss would take the game on a walkoff to win the series.
Ole Miss baseball would also notch another win yesterday against Little Rock by a score of 12-10 before taking on Missouri in their next conference series kicking off tomorrow night.
The Rebels now sit at 24-21 on the year and 5-16 in the SEC.
