Ole Miss Football: Predicting the Rebels 2023 win-loss total game by game
The 2023 Ole Miss football schedule will be one of the hardest in all of college football this upcoming season. We’re taking a look at all of the Rebels’ 2023 opponents and how they may fare in each matchup.
The schedule makers didn’t do the Ole Miss football squad any favors this coming fall. With fall camp right around the corner for the Rebels there isn’t much time to prepare for a schedule that contains the usual heavyweights of the SEC West as well as the East’s top team in the Georgia Bulldogs.
So just how many wins can the Rebels pull out? After the Rebels’ first 10-win season in program history a couple of years ago, last year they got off to a hot 7-1 start but would go on to lose five of their last six games. The opponents aren’t getting any easier, so, is it possible to repeat the success from 2021?
- Week 1, Mercer
The Rebels kick off the season with an FCS opponent in the Mercer Bears. While the Bears are a respectable opponent at the FCS level, the Rebels should win big in the opener. Prediction: Win
- Week 2, Tulane
In any other year, most people would put this down as an easy win for Ole Miss football. However, the Tulane Green Wave are coming off a 12-2 season that was capped off by a big upset over USC in the Cotton Bowl. Head coach Willie Fritz always has this team ready to play and this will be no easy walk in the park for the Rebels. All of that being said, I think that there is still more talent in the Red and Blue to pull this one out. Prediction: Win
- Week 3, Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets have been struggling to find their identity since the retirement of longtime head coach Paul Johnson a few years ago. The Rebels should begin 3-0 here. Prediction: Win
- Week 4, Alabama
It was a tight one in Oxford last year as the Rebels were narrowly edged out by the Crimson Tide 30-24. Everyone who is not an Alabama fan is seemingly waiting on their downfall, which seems imminent with the rise of the Georgia Bulldogs, but one thing is for sure, as long as Nick Saban is the head coach they will remain one of college football’s top teams. I’m not sure Kiffin beats his old mentor yet. Prediction: Loss
- Week 5, LSU
The Rebels suffered their first defeat of 2022 at the hands of the Tigers last season. Chip Kelly seemingly has this team on the rise and they should be in contention to win the SEC West. The Rebels could take their second loss of the season here. Prediction: Loss
- Week 6, Arkansas
Since head coach Sam Pittman took over at the helm, the Razorbacks have been a tough out for every opponent. Ole Miss was embarrassed by this team last year but with the matchup coming back to Oxford look for the Rebels to get revenge. Prediction: Win
- Week 7, Auburn
There will be a familiar face in the blue and orange this year as former Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze is now the head man in Auburn. While Freeze will no doubt have the Tigers ready to compete with the SEC’s best, it takes time to build a dominant program and the Tigers will have a new look with a new coach and a whole host of transfers taking over. Prediction: Win
- Week 8, Vanderbilt
The token SEC win you can count on for the Rebels normally, as well as all of the SEC East teams. Prediction: Win
- Week 9, Texas A&M
Since taking over in 2018, you could say Jimbo Fisher’s time in College Station has been mostly a disappointment. After his worst finish yet in 2022 at 5-7, the writing could be on the wall this year for the head coach. They will no doubt return a talented roster but the question will remain can they put it all together to contend for an SEC West title. Prediction: Win
- Week 10, Georgia
Not much needs to be said about the back-to-back National Champions. The Rebels drew the short end of the stick on this one. Prediction: Loss
- Week 11, Louisiana Monroe
Let’s just hope no crazy upsets are in store. Prediction: Win
- Week 12, Mississippi State
A game that is sure to be full of penalties, theatrics, and wild plays the Egg Bowl is truly one of those rivalries in which you can throw out the record books. This game has been a pretty even matchup for the last decade and this year will likely be similar. Although the Bulldogs will be under a new first-year head coach, they are also returning a bevy of starters from a year ago. This one could go either way. Prediction: Win
If the schedule were to shake out as predicted above, the Rebels would be headed for a 9-3 finish, a rather successful season in the eyes of most Ole Miss fans. One thing is for sure, in the toughest division in college football anything can happen, and there’s a scenario where the Rebels finish 6-6 just like they could finish 10-2.
