SEC penalize Ole Miss due to game interruption
With so many highs coming from the LSU win on Saturday night, Ole Miss Football today received a statement from the Southern conference. This was regarding the fan interruption that occurred during the game against LSU at the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The Southern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey today penalized the University of Mississippi, regarding the fan interruption during Saturdays game. With Sankey saying “The disruption and delay of Saturday night’s game must never be part of any SEC event.”
The game was brought to a halt during the 4th quarter, after LSU receiver Brain Thomas Jr had caught a TD pass in the corner of the end zone. The on field call was a TD, however, the play went to a review as all scoring plays do in college football. Replays suggested that Thomas Jr did not have full control of the ball when his feet touched the ground. The TD stood as called, resulting in an unhappy home crowd.
After the officials confirmed the decision, objects were thrown onto the field, halting the game. The game was resumed a few minutes later, with jeering continuing around the stadium. The Rebel fans did seem to be right in their annoyance of the decision, but went about it the wrong way.
The University must now meet requirements set forth by the commissioner, including using all resources from the stadium to identify individuals who threw objects onto the field. Also, the University will face a financial penalty, with $75,000 being deducted from their share of this seasons SEC revenue distribution.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey also said “These actions are consistent with the oversight assigned by the membership to the SEC office, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews.”
It’s a small dampener on what was a tremendous night in Oxford for the Ole Miss fans. However, most fans conducted themselves properly during the questionable decision from the officials.
