The Ole Miss fans saw it coming, but the failed comeback from Ole Miss men's basketball made the 2026 season's end that much tougher for the Rebel Nation.

Chris Beard's squad missed a shot at the SEC Tournament title and an automatic NCAA Tourney bid due to a mere 3-point deficit against Arkansas.

The effect that the unforgiving loss had on the team was evident in post-game media appearances, as Beard was barely holding back his tears when giving his post-game speech.

Chris Beard's emotional speech as Ole Miss heads into offseason

"But this team competed all the way to the end. The speech that I just gave them in the locker room after the game is one of the hardest things you have to do each season. Everybody has to do it except for one team," Beard said post-Arkansas loss.

"Today was a different speech I envisioned giving this team because of the way we made a run here in Nashville. Just so happy and proud of the players."

Beard emphasized how proud he was of his team for not giving up after having the worst season in the program's history. Had the team had a couple of more seconds on the clock in overtime, they could have been the ones preparing for another Sweet 16 appearance.

"The guys didn't quit. That's not coaching speak. It's just true. You saw how we played. We didn't lose the game today. We ran out of time. Big difference. We're one inch away from being in here preparing for the championship game tomorrow."

"We just kept fighting. I wish I had some kind of other way to say it with words. Heartbreaking loss. Next day, 10 a.m., film session. You walk in the gym, guys are working on their game, shooting free throws, watching clips. I walk in that film room, 15 players looking at you, let's go back to work. Let's try to win the next one."

"No other way to say it other than these guys didn't quit on themselves, on the team, the coaching staff. They allowed us to coach 'em hard every day all the way down to the last possession."

Their season might have come to an end, but their comeback arc is yet to be written, and their first day in the offseason would mark the first page of that chapter.
