In a spotlight-stealing opener against the Buffalo Bills, first-round rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart delivered an impressive performance, sparking excitement and optimism across the Giants’ camp. The three-year Rebel QB, who set nearly every record at Ole Miss, became the third QB drafted in the first round from the University and the only one without the last name Manning.
Dart completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards and recorded a touchdown. He also showcased his mobility, rushing for 24 yards on three carries. He certainly flashed the potential to be a starting QB in the NFL and showcased why he was a first round talent.
n the second quarter, Dart delivered a perfectly placed, 29-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey under heavy pressure—standing tall in the pocket before absorbing a big hit.

Dart also put on display the ability to use his legs to extend plays, escape the pocket, and when needed run for it. On a first & 10 with the pocket collapsing, he would evade a few defenders and take off for the first down and much more, picking up 19 yards. He also showed the same grit that he did frequently in college by refusing to slide or go down easy.

Head coach Brian Daboll lauded his performance as “efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket,” noting that the outing went “just about what I thought he would do.” Dart’s mental maturity stood out, as he later modestly dismissed his own outing as “mid,” citing room for improvement on third-down conversions and a few deflected passes.
Dart should continue to play significant snaps in the final two preseason games for the Giants, as they attempt to get their first round pick some work in ahead of the season. Dart is not currently in competition for the starting position. Russel Wilson is expected to be the starter when the regular season begins.
However, Dart is competing with veteran QB Jameis Winston for the backup job. The Giants are not expected to be a great team this season and depending on how the season shakes out, it is possible that Dart could start towards the end of the year.
