Memphis struck first on the top of the first inning to go up 1-0. That lead would not last long.
Ole Miss players came in clutch
Utermark responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to left field, giving Ole Miss a 2-1 lead. But the Rebels didn't stop there.
The Rebels added two more runs in the 2nd inning to put themselves up 4-1. Then after that Topher Jones gave the Rebels a 5-1 in the fifth inning, giving him his first home run as a Rebel. The dugout was on its feet when Jones hit the home run.
Utermark came up clutch again in the sixth inning, notching his second home run of the night to put the Rebels up 7-1 and to cap off a star-studded night. He also moved into eighth place to tie Stephen Head and Burney Hutchinson with 37 career home runs in Rebels history.
"There are a lot of really good baseball players to come through Ole Miss, and it's an honor to be on that list," he said following the win. "We're trying to win a national championship. That's what really matters."
Starter Owen Kelly allowed one run over four innings while striking out five.
Right-hander Grayson Gibson notched his first career win with four scoreless innings in relief. He also struck out five that he faced.
"Grayson was really good," said head coach Mike Bianco. "How could you not be pleased with what he did? Faced the minimum in four innings."
Gibson said he was in control throughout the entire game.
"I was very comfortable out there," he said. "My fastball command was really good and I trusted my defense. I was glad I picked off the runner I hit so I could face the minimum for four innings. I've always had a good pickoff move, but coach Joel Mangrum has made it better."
The Rebels look to keep the winning momentum going as they continue their five-game homestand against North Alabama Wednesday. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network.
