Beating No. 2 Georgia will not be an easy task, but if the Rebels can win a few key areas, the path to taking down the Bulldogs will be much more clear.
It should go without saying that this is an important game for No. 10 Ole Miss. In fact, calling it a must-win might be an understatement. For Pete Golding and the Ole Miss Rebels, anything short of victory could leave them needing a substantial amount of help from all over the country to keep their playoff hopes alive.
A win, however, for the Rebels would put them in an excellent position to have their ticket punched to the final 12-team College Football Playoff and potentially reach the SEC championship game for the first time in the program's history. Just your average SEC game, right?
If the Rebels want to win, these three things are going to be key.
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and Ole Miss fans must be as intimidating as ever
There is just something different about Ole Miss football being played in Oxford over the past few years. Since the start of the 2023 season, Ole Miss is 26-1 at home, and 38-3 at home if you want to look all the way back to the 2021 season. It's not shocking to say that home-field advantage is a thing, but for Ole Miss, it's also like they become a whole new team.
Ole Miss, while playing in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, has been noticeably more productive offensively, averaging 457.8 yards per game, compared to on the road, where they are only averaging 399.3 yards per game. In their neutral-site competition against Louisville, they had 488. Ole Miss' defense has been night and day better at home than it has been on the road in SEC play.
The Rebels have been extremely stingy at home, giving up only 14 points and 340 yards per game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, rather than 34.3 points and 420 yards allowed per contest on the road. The discrepancy has been even more dramatic against the run, where Ole Miss has given up just 91.3 rushing yards per game at home but 204 yards per game on the road. Against Georgia's run-oriented offense, keeping that performance up will be crucial.
You can't deny it's difficult to win on the road in the SEC, especially in Oxford as of late. The Rebels hosted 70,033 for the emotional and thrilling victory over LSU earlier in the season, and something in the air feels like that record could be broken around 6:30 Saturday night.
Rebs defensive line must take control
Ole Miss' defensive front could be key in their matchup against Georgia. This season, the Rebels have accumulated 17 sacks, with Blake Purchase leading the team with 4.5 and Suntarine Perkins contributing 3.5. Will Echoles, who was named a Lombardi Award semifinalist this week, has been a key part of the defensive line and even scored a rushing touchdown against Auburn.
The 2024 meeting with Georgia provided a blueprint for how to beat a Kirby Smart-led team. Ole Miss dictated the line of scrimmage throughout the game and sacked Carson Beck five times, limiting the Bulldogs to 245 yards of total offense and 59 rushing yards in a 28-10 victory. It was the defensive line that set the tone that night, causing havoc for the Georgia offense.
Getting that kind of pressure is going to be key on Saturday. Georgia's 51.6% third-down conversion rate against is second-best in the SEC this year, while Ole Miss's defense faces a third-down conversion rate of 42.4%. If the Rebels can put enough pressure on the quarterback, hold their own in the trenches, and get off the field on third down, they'll have the same recipe that worked in 2024.
Extra to watch is how much star linebacker suntarine perkins will play.
Trinidad Chambliss should have his Heisman moment
The race for the Heisman is wide open. Star Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney seems to be out with a rumored ankle injury, and Ohio State Heisman hopeful Jermiah Smith is now having to fight an uphill battle, with backup QB Luke Fahey throwing him open passes for the remainder of the season. This leaves the door open for anyone to claim the trophy, with no clear favorite emerging at this point in the season.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss will almost certainly have to have a big game to help secure a victory for the Rebels.
One statistic that is unique for Ole Miss heading into Saturday is Trinidad Chambliss' success when reaching the 300-yard passing mark. Throughout his Ole Miss career, the Rebels are a perfect 10-0 in games when Chambliss throws for at least 300 yards. If he can reach that milestone again against Georgia, history suggests the Rebels will be in a good position to come away with the all-but-certain CFP clinching win.
You also almost have to guarantee that Chambliss will show his 2025 Sugar Bowl magic to evade what has been a disruptive Bulldogs defensive line. Ole Miss' offensive line has been amazing up to this point in the season, but the Rebels' offense seems to click into another gear when Trindiad is willing to take off and use his feet.
