Ole Miss has questions for the CFP committee; one is not regarding South Carolina, which stays below the Rebels
South Carolina fans may need to eat some humble pie tonight, as the College Football Playoff committee ranked them No.14, one spot below Ole Miss.
In the last four days, we have heard head coach Shane Beamer and the fans talk about the Gamecocks being a deserving playoff team. It turns out that the selection committee didn't think they were close, keeping them below the Rebels, a team that blew them away on their field.
Miami, ranked between Alabama and Ole Miss, is a surprise
We will continue to tell the South Carolina fans, 'I told you so,' for a few days. However, the biggest surprise for the Rebels was not that Alabama was ranked ahead of them but that Miami was also in front of them.
When ESPN's Rece Davis asked CFP chair Warde Manuel why Alabama was ranked above Miami, he gave a fair answer.
“What it really came down to is that Alabama is 3-1 against current top 25 teams and Miami is 0-1. Both have had some losses that weren’t what they wanted, but in the last three games, Miami has lost twice."
-Warde Manuel, CFP chair
Hang on a minute; in that case, why is Ole Miss ranked below Miami? The Rebels are 2-0 against ranked opponents, one of the No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, who will compete in an SEC title game. Also, they didn't have two wins, which was helped by very questionable officiating; Miami should arguably be 8-4.
It would not change the fact that Ole Miss will likely not make the College Football Playoff if it was ranked No.12 or No.13, as Manuel also confirmed that teams not playing in conference championship weekend would be unable to move up. However, it must make sense, and Miami above Ole Miss does not.
We will wait till Sunday to see if Ole Miss slips down one or two places, depending on the outcome of the Conference Championship games. The difference is the location of their bowl game.
