Auburn announced its decision to part ways with Hugh Freeze on Sunday, and it meant another opportunity for Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin to have his name at the top of the head coaching candidates list.

Although Kiffin has resisted all the strongest rumors of him considering another job, another vacancy naturally comes with rumors of him with the job.

SEC mouthpiece Paul Finebaum believes that Kiffin still has a "move left in him," just that anyone doesn't really know when it will happen.

“Right now, everyone in Oxford is saying, ‘We don’t bother Lane.’ I mean, they’re afraid of Lane. It’s a little bit Saban-esque. They won’t be afraid of him anywhere else,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show.

"Don’t believe that Lane is not considering these jobs, OK? I can’t tell you what he’s going to do, but it’s just a matter [of time]. I think Lane has another move in him. I just don’t know when it is or where it is, but it’s coming.”

The only reason that makes sense for Lane Kiffin to consider Auburn

For now, the only argument that Kiffin could consider going to the Plains would be his previous undeniable interest in the Auburn head coaching role in 2022.

Kiffin would have been at Auburn in place of Ole Miss were it not for his daughter, Landry, convincing him to stay in Oxford with the help of a PowerPoint presentation.

“I’m not saying I was going. I don’t know that. I was deciding, but that made the decision for me," Kiffin said in his documentary Many Lives of Lane Kiffin.

However, Landry did mention that she was a student then and did not want to move mid-college. Now, with her grraduating soon, Kiffin might be tempted to reconsider.

"I mean, Auburn came this close to getting him three years ago. The family finally said don’t go, but that’s changed now," Finebaum added.

All that said, it was three years ago. Ever since, Kiffin has made remarkable progress at Ole Miss, evident from their records each season and their college football playoff chances this season.

The situation has changed a lot for Kiffin, and him considering another job when he is with a team that could get him to a national championship this season or next sounds like a pipe dream.
