Pete Golding has finally found the way to crack the code on what perhaps is the biggest offseason question for Ole Miss: QB2 battle.

Everyone in Oxford, and the rival schools, wants to know who's going to back up Trinidad Chambliss. The updates till now had Golding swerving around the topic, giving updates on Deuce Knight, Walker Howard, and AJ Maddox's improvements, but never actually tipping his hand.

Pete Golding: Evaluation over emotions

Now, however, Golding has laid out his exact criteria on how he's going to make his choice. Filtering out the noise, Golding plans on focusing on the cold, hard stat sheet over emotions.

"I mean, I think spring is putting them in those situations. And kind of removing your emotions once you get through it. And let’s really look at the stats, right? And the grades and the production. And because so many times, right, it could have been a receiver that didn’t catch it wasn’t the quarterback’s fault. It could have been an issue up front. And then get a clean pocket," Golding said.

The Ole Miss HC might or might not be making his decision by the end of next week. Even if he does, there'll be little chance he makes it public this early in the offseason.

"We've got some guys in that room who have played before. We got a couple that haven’t at this level. They got a lot of talent. So I think it’s sitting down next week and really evaluating what type of spring do they actually have? Not what we think, but actually going back and looking at it and grading and detailing it. And right now, this plan is, moving forward, what’s that going to look like for June and July, knowing it’s going to be a competition up until game one? But I think it would be unfair to them in that room to really answer that without having been able to really go through everything."

Then again, it's Golding we're talking about. UNlike the previous Ole Miss head coach, Golding might actually not turn an update like this into an absolute cliffhanger till the very last moment. We'll see.
