Are these four the best quarterbacks Ole Miss will face in 2024?
Ole Miss will face several teams boasting talented position groups and individual players. The QBs the Rebels will face during the 2024 season is not a position that jumps off the page with talent.
That being said, several could cause Pete Golding's defense problems. Are these four quarterbacks the best Ole Miss will face this season?
A five-star recruit from the 2023 class, Jackson Arnold is in line to be a top quarterback in 2024. With limited game experience, this is all about projection, which likely speaks volumes about the quarterbacks Ole Miss faces who aren't ranked ahead of Arnold.
Aside from a few cameos in games, Arnold's first full taste of action came in the Alamo Bowl loss to Arizona. His stats in the game were 26-45 for 361 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Despite the turnovers, Arnold showed he has the arm talent and poise to be a problem for Ole Miss in their 2024 match-up.
Garrett Nussmeier has had to wait patiently for three seasons, two behind Heisman winner Jayden Daniels. The 2021 four-star recruit has featured in a handful of games in that time. One of those was in the second half of the 2022 SEC Championship game against Georgia. With Daniels injured, Nussmeier held his own against the best defense in college football.
Nussmeier also started the Reliaquest Bowl game against Wisconsin, finishing with stats of 31-45 for 395 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. The home-state kid has a rocket for an arm, something the Rebel's secondary will have to watch out for in their week 7 game in Baton Rouge.
In his first season with Florida after transferring from Wisconsin, Graham Mertz was a big part of the Gators' not being even worse in 2023. Mertz finished the season with a completion percentage of 73%, completing 261 passes from 358 attempts. That landed him third in the nation behind Bo Nix of Orgeon and Jacob Zeno of UAB.
He was also fourth in the SEC in passer ratings, with a 157.8 rating, behind Ole Miss's Jaxson Dart. He may have to do a lot of the heavy lifting again on offense in 2024, with the projection of another underachieving season for Billy Napier.
There was only ever going to be one choice here, with Georgia's Carson Beck the best quarterback in the SEC and most likely the nation. Beck sat just behind Mertz in completion percentage with 72.4%. He can make plays with his legs. However, Beck can dice the best defenses up with his passing.
With several dazzling performances last season, Ole Miss witnessed firsthand Beck's capabilities. In a one-sided game, Beck finished with 306 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception from 18 completed passes. One shining light for the Rebels is that Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey have departed. Though Beck is such a high-quality passer, he can make average receivers look good.
