New 5-7 format announced for 2024 12-team College Football Playoff
The 12-team College Football Playoff will be in effect for the 2024 season. Today, the committee announced the format of how the 12 teams would be selected.
The College Football Playoffs will move to a 12-team format for the first time this season. The college football committee have released the new format on how the 12 teams would be selected.
The committee have decided to go with a 5-7 format, changing from the previous 6-6 format. The top five highest-ranked conference champions and the top seven non-conference champions would make the 12-team playoff in 2024.
The four highest-ranked conference champions would be seeded one through four, all receiving a first-round bye. The remaining teams ranked 5 through 12 would play in the first round of the playoffs, with the highest-ranked team receiving home-field advantage.
The hope of having the highest five conference champions automatically make the playoffs will hopefully reduce backlash for the committee. However, teams falling outside the twelve spots may suggest otherwise in 2024.
In the latest 247 Sports early projections for the 12-team playoff, number nine-ranked Ole Miss would travel to Ann Arbor to take on number eight-ranked Michigan. Michigan, the current college football champions, would be a tough match-up despite the departure of head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Ole Miss has been ranked as high as number three in some media's way-too-early predictions. Lane Kiffin will certainly be looking for a first-round bye. However, getting to the playoffs this season will be the goal.
