Ole Miss football head coach Lane Kiffin's job security seen as untouchable
Which college football head coaches are under the most pressure to win heading into the 2024 season? CBS writer Dennis Dodd thoroughly evaluated all 134 FBS coaches' job security, ranging from 0 being untouchable to 5, win or be fired.
From that list of head coaches, 13 jobs were seen as untouchable, including Ole Miss's Lane Kiffin. After going 11-2 last season and the work Kiffin has done this off-season, Dodd believes whatever happens this season, the Rebels head coach will be back in 2025.
Before the start of last season, Dodd had Lane Kiffin fall in the 2 rating; all good...for now. Now, the Ole Miss head coach's job is seen as untouchable, just like Georgia's Kirby Smart and Oregon's Dan Lanning.
Only one head coach fell into the win or be-fired rating: Arkansas's Sam Pittman. Before last season, Pittman's job was seen as safe and secure. This shows how the college landscape for any head coach can change drastically.
Where would Lane Kiffin rank if Ole Miss failed to make the CFPs
As mentioned, a college head coach's job security can change from season to season. Sam Pittman wasn't the only SEC coach to see more pressure heaped on him within a season. Florida's Billy Napier was rated a 2, just like Lane Kiffin, at the start of the 2023 season. Napier is now at 4; start improving now.
As Ole Miss fans, we know the Rebels are heading to the playoffs. However, to play the contrarian, what if Lane Kiffin falls short of a playoff spot with an 8-4 record?
It will not drastically change his job security, potentially moving back to all good for now. Even if Ole Miss scrapes a bowl game, I don't think it will exceed a 2 rating. Yes, it will be disappointing, but it would take two bad seasons for any pressure to be on Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin has turned the program around in his four seasons in Oxford. In year five, he will look to have his fourth consecutive winning season with eight wins or more. A record like that in the SEC should not be taken lightly.
