The Rebels are 42 days away from running out onto Hollingsworth field to take on FCS side Furman in the opening game of the 2024 season. As expected, Ole Miss has opened as huge point favorites over the Paladins, with them as big as +42.5 point favorites.

In the opening game of the 2023 season, Ole Miss dismantled another FCS team in Mercer, 73-7, scoring ten touchdowns. Against Furman, they are just over a six-touchdown favorite.

Both Mercer and Furman play in the Southern Conference in the FCS. The Paladins beat the Bears 38-14 in last season's week 4 game. Furman went on to make the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs, losing to eventual runners-up Montana.

Furman did play an SEC team last season, losing to South Carolina 47-21. The Paladins played hard, down just two touchdowns at the half. Heading into the 2024 season, they have lost some of their more productive starters and will have a new starting quarterback.

Ole Miss can't take Furman lightly in season opener

Despite being heavily favored in the game, Ole Miss can not just roll in and expect to win if they underperform. Even with an average performance, they likely will, just like South Carolina did last season when facing Furman.

Head coach Lane Kiffin will not allow complacency but will expect some teething problems, especially on defense with so many new parts. With no disrespect to Furman, playing teams Ole Miss should beat gets them ready for the more brutal games down the road.

Any average performances are forgotten about when it comes to making the playoffs, as long as they are wins. Games against LSU, Oklahoma, and Georgia will determine if the Rebels do the business in the others.

Ole Miss vs. Furman will be available to watch on August 31 on SEC Network+ and ESPN+. Kick-off will be at 6 p.m. CT.
