Ole Miss football jumped into the top five of the latest AP Poll, the program's first time in nearly a decade. The last time they were ranked inside the top five was in 2015, with the Rebels ranked No.3 in September after four wins, including a win over No. 2 Alabama.

The Rebels were also ranked tat No. 5 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, as they were last week. The Rebels sit at 2-0 after wins over Furman and Middle Tennessee, with both wins expected, they still did it with style points, outscoring 128-3.

Ole Miss moves into top 5 courtesy of Notre Dame loss

Ole Miss would have likely stayed at No.6 if it wasn't for Notre Dame's shock defeat. The Fighting Irish were upset by Northern Illinois, losing 16-14 and missing a long field goal in the final seconds. The loss dropped Notre Dame to No.18, falling 13 spots.

Missouri moved up to No.6 just behind Ole Miss, with Tennessee a big move also, now ranked No.7. The top 10 now features 6 SEC teams, just to confirm that the conference is the best in the nation, with some doubt recently. LSU and Oklahoma were the other two SEC teams ranked after Week 2.

Ole Miss will face a more challenging opponent again in Week 3 when they face Wake Forest from the ACC. The Rebels will be expected to win again despite being on the road. All road games are tough despite the opposition, so Ole Miss will need to be on it so they don't drop out of the top 5.

We also need to take these rankings with a pinch of salt. We will really find out which teams are fighting for a playoff spot when conference games start to roll out.
